Recent Garden Happenings

My fall garden is winding down.

The only thing I have left out there are carrots, beets, Brussels sprouts and a single head of cabbage.  I'm still picking carrots and they are still scrumptious!  Check out these beauties...

And the Brussels sprouts are doing very well also.  I picked two stalks for Christmas dinner and made a delicious (and easy) dish I've been wanting to try, Creamy Braised Brussels Sprouts.  Stay tuned for that post!

And my beets got hit pretty hard by several hard freezes; but aside from the greens looking pretty ragged, they are growing and are quite tasty, although not very big.  But that's OK...I prefer baby beets anyway :)  I made a baby beet, goat cheese and toasted pumpkin seed salad the other night, (adapted from a recipe from The Whimsical Gardener).  Thanks, Cat, great recipe!  I'll post that one soon as well.

My green onions are finally growing!  Once I took out the oak tree that was blocking the sun from my garden, the spring onions began to sprout and are doing quite well.  They are somewhat shielded from the frosts by the Brussels sprouts so that helps also.

My fall garden has done fairly well this year, although I am disappointed with a number of things.  Again, most of these are due to lack of sunshine from that oak tree:  None of the spinach, kale, or Swiss chard that I planted germinated; my beets were pretty lame; and the green onions were very slow to grow.  But, all in all, it was a successful fall garden, but not my best by a long shot.  But that's OK...there's always next year :)

  1. How wonderful that you have the space and sunlight to grow veggies. I've had to take down a few trees, too, but have a happier garden as a result. Yummm.... baby beets! :o)

  4. Hi Diane,

Did you harvest it? your carrot look healthy.

Just like to share with you a life quote...

"I love my past. I love my present. I'm not ashamed of what I've had, and I'm not sad because I have it no longer. " -- Colette

  6. Gardening is a "swings and roundabouts" hobby, isn't it? Some things do well some years, some don't, and just because it failed this year doesn't mean it won't do well next year. We always live in hope! So many of my blogging friends have been writing about the effects of cold weather on their gardens for several weeks now. I imagine that the manufacturers of crop-protection products have been doing good business just recently.

  10. Hi Lrong! Thank you for stopping by! The carrots are lovely, although I only have a few left in the garden. Your Japanese garden is wonderful, as are your photographs! I love your sweet potatoes! I plan to grow them this fall. How lucky that you got to spend some time in Texas! It's a great state! Happy New Year to you too!

  11. Dear Diane
Thanks for your compliments... actually the garden is quite untidy... I need to 'beautify' it more... your comment about being married to 'the kindest man in the universe' caught my attention... my missus and I shall be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this coming April... while there is probably zero chance of me coming close to being the kindest man in the universe, my sole resolution for 2011 is to 'listen to my wife' from now on...
PS: sorry for the mis-spelling on 'Taxan'...
