Found by the Side of the Road

Aren't they beautiful?!  My sister and I were driving home Wednesday afternoon when something in the tall grass off the side of the road caught our attention.  We both saw what appeared to be ears sticking up out of the grass.  So we turned the car around, got out and approached what we assumed was a puppy.  Well, it turned out to be two puppies.  So tiny and skinny and obviously starving.  We were able to pick up the little one right away.  But the larger girl ran off down the road.  I followed her and with the help of a passing truck who stopped traffic behind him, I was able to pick her up too.  I live in a very rural area of South Texas and people just do this kind of thing for each other.

What could we do but take these beautiful girls home.  I think they are some type of German/Belgian Shepard or Shepard mix and they are just gorgeous and so very sweet.  I can't believe how skinny they both are.   I assume they are sisters but one is much larger than they other and they have obviously been without food for quite some time.  Considering the freezing nighttime temperatures we've had these past few nights, it broke my heart to think how cold they must have been and how hungry they are.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them (although in my heart I'm pretty sure), but I know that for now, they are warm, safe, have food and water, lots of love and affection, and have a big crate with lots of warm blankets to sleep in.  Today I take them to my vet for a good examination.  Stay tuned :)

  2. What a sweet rescue story Diane...I have a feeling you'll be naming them rather soon ;-)
Our dog was a rescue dog. His mom was hit by a car and the litter was found on the side of the highway...a wonderful woman picked them all up (8 of them) and bottle fed the entire group every two hours!! We are so blessed that she made the sacrifice because Blitz has been such a unifying force in our lives as our kids have grown up.

    You've got a kind heart <3 Cat

  3. Diane, it was clearly fate, and so good of you to stop. I once stood in the middle of a lane on the freeway to save a dog from certain death. How wonderful that they both found you. Except for needing some extra calories, I hope they both check out to be healthy. Congratulations on your new puppies!

  4. Hi Cat...you're right ;) I did decide to keep them. There was no way I was going to give them up. Now comes the fun part...training them :) But I will enjoy that part too. Blitz...I love his name!

Hi Curbstone Valley Farm...thanks for your note! That's pretty much all they need...calories and deworming; They are healthy otherwise. Thanks for visiting!

  8. Hi Island Threads...yes, I, too, am appalled and so puzzled as to how people can just abandon helpless puppies and kittens (and other animals)so randomly and without a 2nd thought. But I also truly believe in Universal karma and "As you sow, so shall you reap." But the puppies are so precious! Thanks for visiting :)

Rachel...yes, I knew you would fall in love with them! :) Surely one day you will get to meet them. They are amazing dogs and I think (know) they found me for a reason. Life is funny that way.

p3chandan...thank you for your kind comments. These puppies are such a blessing to me. I've only had them 2 days and yet, I can't imagine my life now without them! Thank you for stopping by!

  9. I am the biggest animal lover and what you did was so compassionate and wonderful. They are beautiful girls and I would have done the same thing. Difference is in New York, it is unlikely anyone would have helped. Great people on the good state of Texas. Some day they will surely pay back your kindness. I am so glad you saved them. This is my first visit to your blog and reading this post, I will be back.

  12. Thank you for stopping and picking them up!!! I volunteer at a no-kill shelter and we are constantly bombarded with other peoples canine/feline "trash". You didn't find them by accident. You were meant to find them and they you. Even dogs have guardian angels!!

  17. Dear Diane, All the pets I have ever owned have been rescue animals and they have all without exception proved to be the most loving and loyal of animals. I cannot believe how people can just abandon animals when there are so many charitable organisations that they can be given to if they are a problem to keep. I know that your new found friends will win a way to your heart and I am so pleased that you can determine a safe and happy furture for them.
