Fall in South Texas
As most of you know, fall is my favorite time of year. For me, it's a time of reflection and gratitude for all the blessings in my life. And I love the colors. I grew up in Southeastern Massachusetts so I know what fall color looks like. Although the colors of the South Texas fall are much more muted, they are in my opinion, equally stunning. I was up and out very early one morning last week just to photograph what my neighborhood looks like at dawn at this time of year. In my opinion, it was breathtaking. Take a look. (But remember, I'm not a professional photographer, I simply tried to capture what I saw.)
And I had this beautiful creature watching me as I crept around in the tall grass. It's an American Kestrel and I see her often in the mornings. I think she's beautiful.
I thought Thanksgiving Day was a good time to share what I saw that beautiful fall morning in the hills of South Texas. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
My husband and I just got back from a trip to the Hill Country (near Canyon Lake). I wanted to stop along the road and take so many pictures, but it just wasn't practical. Your pictures reflect all of the beauty I saw as we were driving!! I love the Hill Country; there's just something about it that makes me want to live there. But I just have one question: How DO you garden down there??? It's nothin' but rocks and deer!!
ReplyDeleteHi Toni!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words. I *love* living in the Hill Country...it's a beautiful place.
As far as gardening, raised beds is the only way to go because, you're right, South Texas is solid rock!
Thanks for stopping by! :)
The grasses are half the beauty of our muted autumns, and you really captured their softness and touchable texture. Here in Austin, my daughter and I have been admiring the wave-like expanse of tawny grasses along MoPac on the way to school. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam,
ReplyDeleteI'm honored to hear from you! I love (love) your blog!
Thanks for stopping by and thank you for your kind comments. Fall has such a beautiful, silent beauty to it; and you're right, the grasses that grace our pastures this time of year somehow capture the essence of the season.
Many blessings to you :)
Hi! I wanted to let you know that the blog carnival "How to Find Great Plants, Issue #1" was published today and includes your post on violas. Thanks for participating!
ReplyDeleteI feel envious that you regularly see that lovely American kestral. I love the 9th photo down on this post -- it looks like there's a prairie rainbow (I just made that up) under the trees.
A peaceful morning beautifully captured Diane! This is my favorite time of year too. We were driving home from Big Bend yesterday and the grasses along 71 out near Llano were amazing. Like Toni, there were so many times I wanted to say "pull over"!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your kind comments!
ReplyDeleteWalking around in the tall grass that early cold morning was really pretty special. The fall in South Texas is really an amazing time of year. And y'all are right...the grasses are the most beautiful part of it. It's hard to describe them and even harder to capture their beauty.
Thank you for visiting Cat and Eliza!
I just came across your site looking for Fall pictures for my background. And I absolutely love it. I will be sure and be back as I would like to learn to grow things the correct way and I love your pictures and easy to read font. I noticed that you haven't posted in a while. I do hope you are still around. My name is Janet and I live on the west side of San Antonio by FM 471 that takes you up by Medina Lake and over to 16 and up to Bandera. We have a small piece of property in Bandera and my husband and I love nothing more than to take a Sunday drive up into the hill country. To me, it is the prettiest part of Texas. We have 3 grown children with youngest still in college so we have time together. My email is flambert@satx.rr.com. We hope to one day move up to our property close to Bandera. I will be back to see more and I hope that you are still around.
ReplyDeleteNice to greet you,
Janet
Hi Janet...so very nice to hear from you! Yes, I'm still around but in a bit of a hiatus right now. As I'm sure you know, this summer has been so brutally hot and dry that my garden is an absolute mess...actually it's pretty embarrassing. It's just too hot to get out there an do *anything*! My tomatoes and peppers are still producing...some; but the rest of my "queendom" looks like hell.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly where you live. We have some goo friends that live in Big Geronimo.
Thank you for your kind words on my site and my garden. Both are a lot of fun for me and as soon as the weather breaks, I will get back at it. Thanks for visiting!
